Cessnock residents will board a bus in Cessnock tomorrow morning (Friday December 19th) to catch the “last train” to Newcastle” fro Maitland Station.
The event is being co-ordinated by Cessnock Greens Councillor James Ryan.
‘After Christmas Day there will be no more trains to Newcastle Station.’ said Mr Ryan.
‘Reducing public transport doesn’t make sense at any time.’ said Mr Ryan. ‘However for generations of Cessnock teenagers the train to Newcastle beach from Maitland was a way of escaping the summer heat and having fun.’
‘Public transport in Cessnock mostly consists of buses to Maitland Railway Station.’
‘The decision by the Baird Government to cut the rail is short sighted. Not only do we want the rail to Newcastle to stay, we want passenger rail services returned to Cessnock.’
‘Resident will be meeting outside of the Cessnock Library at 10am to catch the 10.15 bus to Maitland Station. At Maitland we will catch the 11.13 train into Newcastle Station where we can walk to the beach.’
‘Everyone is invited to join in this sad and symbolic “last train” to Newcastle Station.
