Greens Councillor Therese Doyle welcomes Lord Mayoral Result and looks forward to a fresh start on Newcastle Council
“I congratulate Nuatali Nelmes on her convincing win at Saturday’s Lord Mayoral by-election. It means a new beginning for Newcastle,” Greens Councillor Therese Doyle said today.
“The election result of 14% for the Newcastle Greens was one of our highest Lord Mayoral votes. Our result, combined with Labor’s decisive win, shows clearly that Newcastle voters want a Council that listens to their concerns, that provides community services once more, and that doesn’t do deals with vested interests behind closed doors”, said Councillor Doyle.
“One of the key messages of this election campaign has been that Newcastle residents reject the interference of the State government in the city’s affairs to advantage developer interests”, claimed Clr Doyle.
“That means they reject the state government’s decision to cut our rail line. They reject the state government’s decision to change our planning instruments to suit GPT and allow high-rise buildings in the city centre. And mostly, they reject the dubious practice, engaged in by the previous Lord Mayor, of dealing with important matters concerning city affairs in secret without the knowledge or consent of the elected council.
“I look forward to a new era of openness on Newcastle City Council where we can all feel assured the affairs of the city will be out in the open and will be conducted democratically, as they should”, emphasised Clr Doyle
