Media Release: Community must come first in planning

Greens candidates for the Newcastle and Charlestown By-Elections, Michael Osborne and Jane Oakley, will tonight throw their support behind a community driven Charter for Good Planning in NSW at an event in Hamilton.

The Better Planning Network will host the, Planning for People: A Community Charter for Good Planning in NSW, from 6.30pm at the Wesley Hall, 150 Beaumont St in Hamilton.

Greens candidate for the Newcastle By-election Michael Osborne said, “The Greens fully endorse the Community Charter for Good Planning and want a planning system that puts local communities first.

“The proposals for inappropriate high-rise development and plans to cut the rail line are examples of planning that goes against the interests of Newcastle residents.

“The Greens will be running on clean politics in this election which is about a planning system where local residents have a greater say about what happens in their community,” Michael Osborne said.

Greens candidate for Charlestown Jane Oakley said, “We have seen that vested interests, particularly developers, have undue influence over our politicians and planning decisions.

“The ICAC has demonstrated that developers are lining the pockets of MPs in NSW and the community is right to be concerned about whether this has influenced their decisions,” Jane Oakley said.
