3PM CITY HUB. WEDNESDAY 20th AUGUST
In May we proved Newcastle cares about education and the future of Australia. We proved that students, staff, and the community were prepared to hit the streets and make ourselves heard. We got coverage on ABC1233, NBN, and in the Newcastle Herald. The National Union of Students have set the date for next National Day of Action which means it’s time for Newcastle to get organised and MAINTAIN THE RAGE!
SOME RAGE-MAINTAINING REMINDERS:
Universities will be able to charge whatever they like for courses.
Due to decreased commonwealth contributions, students will pay 20% more, and that’s before any fee increases by the universities.
INTEREST ON HELP LOANS
Currently HELP loans are indexed only to keep up with inflation. Under the government’s policy, interest of up to 6% will be charged for past, present, and future students.
FEES FOR RESEARCH STUDENTS
The government wants to cut funding for research students, meaning for the first time, PhD and masters research students will be required to pay fees of $1700 and $3900 a year.
ABOLITION OF FREE HEALTHCARE
The new $7 charge to see a GP will disproportionately affect students, two thirds of whom live below the poverty line.
NEWSTART AND YOUTH ALLOWANCE
Savage changes to new start and youth allowance with a waiting time of 6 months; earn or learn or starve and suffer.
Unlike the last rally, we have a much longer period of time to get organised (a whole two months) so we have no excuse for not making this protest bigger, better, and louder than before. Step one of that is INVITE EVERYONE AND SHARE.
It’s particularly important to keep the pressure up because the new Senate is now in effect, and we need to make sure all opposition and cross-bench senators keep their word.
