One Response to Don’t sell off public disability services – Forum March 11th

I would like to give a different view to the closure of Stockton, I know that the resistance to this is engendered by fear. Fear of staff that they will lose jobs, but mostly fear of families that want to keep family members “safe”. I have worked in disability for 30 years and was involved in the closure of a small institution (54 middle aged people) almost that long ago, and faced the fear of parents. I would like to share the wonderful experience of those people, who settled so well into the community, they came to life and started seeing themselves as individuals. They are still involved in community activities which they enjoy alongside people without a disability. Would each of you like to spend the rest of your life in the equivalent of a Nursing Home?? I don’t think so! Staff will still be able to work with the people who they have worked with for, sometimes years, and families will get to see their family members bloom.
