Major port expansion in Newcastle – T4

There is an additional coal export terminal planned for Newcastle Port. It is known as the Terminal 4 Project (T4).  The project is currently on public exhibition and public submissions are called for by 23 April 2012.

The T4 Project is being assessed by both the Commonwealth and NSW governments – read the proposal here. The project has triggered Federal environment legislation because it will adversely impact the Ramsar listed wetlands which are part of the Hunter Wetlands National Park on Kooragang Island. Thus final assessment of the project will lie with the Federal Environment Minister.
The NSW Greens oppose the T4 Project on the grounds that it is intrinsically linked to the devastating expansion of coal mining in the Hunter Valley. Without this expansion there would be no need for T4.
