Media Alert: Greens to announce push to axe bad laws, not healthy trees

5 February 2011

The Greens will tomorrow announce a law reform campaign to save street trees across NSW that are now under threat by the court finding on Newcastle’s Laman St trees.

The announcement will made by David Shoebridge (Greens lead candidate for the Legislative Council) and John Sutton (Greens candidate for Newcastle) at 11.30am tomorrow (Sunday, 6 February) in Laman St, at the site of the recent community vigil to save the Laman St trees.

“Whilst the Laman Street trees are now safe for the time being, the Land and Environment Court finding presents a threat to street trees right around NSW,”  Mr Sutton said.

“The finding effectively paves the way for roads authorities to ignore normal planning requirements for removing street trees, even when they don’t present an immediate danger.

“The Greens believe that this is unacceptable, and that the Laman St case shows the need for significant reform of such laws.”

When: 11am, Sunday 6 February

Where: Laman St (near entrance to Newcastle Library)
