Night Vigil – Community Gathers to Save Figs

From this Saturday 18th of September families from throughout the Region are invited to gather on the footpaths below the majestic fig trees in Laman St, Newcastle between 5 and 9pm each night to show support for the iconic Laman Street Figs.

The community campaign group Save our Figs Spokesperson Caity Raschke said “ We want to encourage families to bring a rug and chairs and enjoy the ambiance of these majestic trees. Musicians have been asked to support the vigil and play at intermittent times”.

An independent assessment of the 14 Figs undertaken by nationally recognised arborist Mark Hartley for the Save our Figs campaigners proved that the trees do not need to be removed.

Campaigners have gone to the Land and Environment Court seeking an injunction to prevent the trees being removed.
