Candlelight Vigil for Mental Health

(near Newcastle Railway Station)
TUESDAY 10th August 2010,  5.30pm to 8pm

In the run-up to the federal election, the Get Up organisation has organised this event around the country to highlight the vitally important area of Mental Health and the urgent need for added resources and funding in the mental health area. Our local event will feature a short meeting followed by the vigil, during which we will remember friends & loved ones, valued community members who are suffering at present, as well as those who have died because of factors arising from their mental illness.

Our aim is to keep the spotlight on Mental Health at this important time when Patrick McGorry, as Australian of the Year, has done so much to put Mental Health on the national election agenda. We must take this opportunity to keep Mental Health in the public eye as voters decide on how they will cast their votes.

The meeting will feature local speakers from the mental health community who will talk briefly about the need for funding and resources, nationally & in our local area. Invited representatives from the three main political parties (Labor, Liberal & Greens) will be asked to give a short response outlining their policies. We will then proceed with the vigil.

Rug up, bring a friend and (if you wish) candle & holder. (We’ll have some there on the night)

Get Up is a non-aligned, not for profit group who act from a grass roots level to effect change on important issues. Much of their work is done on-line, so check them out. Meanwhile, enquiries about the vigil may be directed to me
